জানা যায়, গ্রিক মিথলজির ধ্বংসের দেবতা ফেয়থনের নামানুসারেই একটি গ্রহাণুর নাম 'ফ্যাথন ৩২০০'। আর এটি ডিসেম্বরের ১৭ তারিখে পৃথিবীর অক্ষরেখা থেকে মাত্র ২০ লক্ষ মাইল দূর যাবে। তাতে ক্ষতির সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন মহাকাশ বিজ্ঞানীরা। তবে নাসার বিজ্ঞানীরা বলছেন, ফ্যাথনের আয়তন বর্তমানে ৫-৮ কিলোমিটার ব্যাসের হলেও তা ছিল আরো বড়। বেশ কয়েকবার সূর্যের কাছে যাওয়ায় তা ভেঙে ভেঙে ছোট হয়ে যায়।

২০০৪ সালেই প্রথম নজরে পড়েছিল গ্রহাণুটি। এরপর গত ১৭ বছর ধরেই গ্রহাণুটির দিকে নজর রাখছিলেন নাসার বিজ্ঞানীরা। আর শেষপর্যন্ত তারা জানালেন, ২০৩৬ সালে পৃথিবীর সঙ্গে সংঘর্ষ হবে গ্রহাণুটির। এই খবরের সত্যতা স্বীকার করে নিয়েছেন ডুয়েন ব্রাউন নামে ওয়াশিংটনের হেডকোয়ার্টারের এক কর্মকর্তা।
স্টিভ চেসলি নামে নাসার এক বিজ্ঞানী এবং পল খোদাস ২০০৯ সাল থেকে গ্রহাণুটির উপর পর্যবেক্ষণ চালাচ্ছিলেন। তারপরেই তারা এই সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হয়েছেন যে, ২০৩৬ সালের ১৩ এপ্রিল পৃথিবীতে আঘাত হানবে অ্যাপোফিস।
ডেভ থোলেন নামে এক বিজ্ঞানী এবং তার সহকারীরাও একই দাবি করেছেন। ওই সংবাদমাধ্যমের খবর অনুযায়ী, নাসা তার ওয়েবসাইটেও এই সংঘর্ষের কথা জানিয়েছে। তবে শুধু ২০৩৬ সালই নয়, ২০২৯ এবং ২০৬৮ সালেও পৃথিবীর খুব কাছ থেকে উড়ে যাবে অ্যাপোফিস। যা থেকেও রয়েছে প্রবল ক্ষয়ক্ষতির সম্ভাবনা।
