এমআইটির নকশা এমনভাবে তৈরি যে দূর থেকে দেখলে মনে হবে লালমাটির উপরে কেউ যেন সযত্নে ছড়িয়ে দিয়েছে একমুঠো মুক্তো। । কিন্তু কাছে গেলেই সে এক প্রকাণ্ড শহর। তার বাড়িগুলো দেখতে অনেকটা এস্কিমোদের ইগলুর মতো। কিন্তু আকৃতিতে বড়। বাড়ির দরজা খুলে ভিতরে ঢুকলেই দেখা যাবে ডালপালা মেলে দাঁড়িয়ে রয়েছে প্রকাণ্ড সব বৃক্ষ। তার ফাঁকেই সাজানো-গোছানো সংসার।

অদূর ভবিষ্যতে এমনই একটা শহর হয়তো গড়ে উঠবে মঙ্গলের মাটিতে। ভিনগ্রহের সেই শহরের নকশা বানিয়েছে এমআইটি।   নাম রাখা হয়েছে ‘রেডউড ফরেস্ট’।
এক-একটা বাড়িতে অন্তত ৫০ জন থাকতে পারবেন। শোওয়া-বিশ্রামের পাশাপাশি থাকবে বেশ খানিকটা খোলা জায়গা। যাতে জলকষ্ট না থাকে, তার জন্যেও আলাদা পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে বিজ্ঞানীদের। বিশেষ ভাবে তৈরি গাছগুলোর নীচে সুড়ঙ্গের মতো চলে যাবে শিকড়। ওই সুড়ঙ্গ-পথেই এক বাড়ি থেকে অন্য বাড়িতে যাতায়াত করবেন বাসিন্দারা। বহির্বিশ্বের ক্ষতিকর কসমিক রশ্মি থেকে বাঁচতেই মাটির তলা দিয়ে রাস্তা তৈরির পরিকল্পনা। তা ছাড়া, মাঝেমধ্যেই উল্কাবৃষ্টিতে আক্রান্ত হয় লালগ্রহ। খোলা আকাশের নীচে সেটাও একটা বিপদ। ঠিক সেই কারণেই ইগলুর মতো দেখতে গোটা বাড়িটা ঢাকা থাকবে সাদা আচ্ছাদনে।

নয় সদস্যের এমআইটি-বাহিনীর নেতৃত্বে রয়েছেন ভ্যালেন্টিনা সুমিনি এবং কেটলিন ম্যুলার। সুমিনি বলেন, ‘‘দৈনন্দিন কাজকর্মের জন্য ব্যবহার করা হবে মঙ্গলের মাটি (রেগোলিথ), জল, বরফ ও অবশ্যই সূর্যালোক। ’’ তাঁর কথায়, ‘‘ইচ্ছে করেই শহরটাকে জঙ্গলের চেহারা দিয়েছি আমরা। এটা অনেকটাই প্রতীকী। সবুজ যে ভাবে বিস্তার লাভ করে, সেই ভাবনাটাকেই তুলে ধরা হয়েছে মঙ্গল-মডেলে। ’’
