লন্ডনের জন্স হপকিন্স ব্লুমবার্গ স্কুল অফ পাবলিক হেল্থের বিজ্ঞানীরা জানিয়েছেন, পাঁচ বা তার বেশি সঙ্গিনীর সঙ্গে মুখমেহন করলে, পুরুষদের শরীরে হিউম্যান প্যাপিলোমা ভাইরাস বা সংক্ষেপে এইচপিভি-র সংক্রমণ ঘটে। আর এই সংক্রমণ থেকেই মাথা ও কাঁধের ক্যান্সারের আক্রান্ত হওয়ার সম্ভবনা বাড়ে। ধূমপায়ীদের ক্ষেত্রে আবার  এইচপিভি-র সংক্রমণ দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। তবে যাঁরা ধূমপান করেন না বা পাঁচ বা তার বেশি সঙ্গিনীর সঙ্গে মুখমেহনে লিপ্ত হননি, তাদের এই ধরনের ক্যান্সারে আক্রান্ত হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা খুবই কম। তেরো হাজারেরও বেশি মানুষের উপর গবেষণা চালিয়েছেন বিজ্ঞানীরা, তাতে দেখা গেছে, মহিলাদের তুলনায় পুরুষদেরই এই সংক্রমণে আক্রান্ত হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি।

সাধারণভাবে যতধরণের যৌন রোগ হয়ে থাকে, তারমধ্যে এই হিউম্যান প্যাপিলোমা ভাইরাস বা এইচপিভি-র সংক্রমণই সবচেয়ে বেশি।

তবে যৌন রোগ নয়, বিজ্ঞানীদের মতে, এইচপিভি আসলে একটি যৌন সংক্রমণ। এই সংক্রমণ এইচআইভি বা এইডসের থেকে কিছুটা আলাদা। চিকিৎসকদের দাবি, যৌন সক্রিয় ব্যক্তিরা জীবনের কোন না কোন সময়ে এইচপিভি-র সংক্রমণে আক্রান্ত হন।
অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই এইচপিভি খুব একটি ক্ষতিকারক নয়। তবে কিছু ক্ষেত্রে এইচপিভি সংক্রমণ থেকে গোপনাঙ্গে ফোঁড়া হতে পারে। সঠিক সময়ে চিকিৎসা না করালে, ক্যানসার হতে পারে।
