জরিপে অংশ নেয়া ১৯ শতাংশ জার্মান নাগরিক যুক্তরাষ্ট্র কিংবা ট্রাম্পকে দ্বিতীয় বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ হিসেবে দেখেন। জার্মানির পররাষ্ট্র নীতির ক্ষেত্রে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পর তুরস্ককে ১৭ শতাংশ, উত্তর কোরিয়াকে ১০ শতাংশ ও রাশিয়াকে ৮ শতাংশ মানুষ চ্যালেঞ্জ মনে করেন।

জানুয়ারিতে হোয়াইট হাউসের দায়িত্ব নেয়ার পর প্যারিস জলবায়ু চুক্তি, ইরানের পারমাণবিক কর্মসূচির ব্যাপারে ছয় বিশ্বশক্তির চুক্তিতে অনুমোদন প্রত্যাখ্যান, জার্মানির বাণিজ্যিক ও পশ্চিমা সামরিক জোট ন্যাটোতে তাদের অবদানের সমালোচনা করেন মার্কিন প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প।

ট্রাম্পের কর্মকাণ্ড ও সমালোচনার জবাবে জার্মান চ্যান্সেলর অ্যাঞ্জেলা মেরকেল চলতি বছরের শুরুর দিকে বলেন, ভবিষ্যতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ওপর কোনোভাবেই নির্ভরশীল হবে না বার্লিন। এমনকি ভাগ্য নিজের হাতে গড়তে ইউরোপের নেতাদের প্রতিও আহ্বান জানান।

কোয়ারবার ফাউন্ডেশনের ওই জরিপ গত অক্টোবরে পরিচালনা করা হয়। এতে বিভিন্ন বয়সের প্রায় এক হাজার জার্মান অংশ নেন। জরিপে অংশ নেয়া ৫৬ শতাংশ মানুষ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে জার্মানির সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক রাখাকে খারাপ অথবা খুবই খারাপ হিসেবে মতামত দিয়েছেন।

বিভিন্ন আন্তর্জাতিক সংকটে জার্মানির সক্রিয় ভূমিকার ব্যাপারে সংশয় প্রকাশ করেছেন প্রায় ৫২ শতাংশ। তারা বলছেন, যুদ্ধ পরবর্তী সংবরণের নীতি এখনো মেনে চলা উচিত বার্লিনের।
