ওয়াশিংটন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট প্রফেসর কোল এডওয়ার্ডস জানিয়েছেন, অক্সিজেনের বৃদ্ধির কারণেই প্রাণের বিস্ফোরণ ঘটার প্রমাণ মিলেছে। প্রায় ৪৫০ মিলিয়ন বছর আগে এই ঘটনা ঘটে। তবে এটাও জোর দিয়ে বলতে হবে যে জীব বৈচিত্র্যের মাত্রা বৃদ্ধির কারণ শুধুমাত্র অক্সিজেনের স্তর বৃদ্ধি নয়। সমুদ্রের শীতল হয়ে যাওয়া, সমুদ্রের পুষ্টি সরবরাহের পরিমাণ বৃদ্ধি পাওয়া ও খাদ্য-খাদক সম্পর্কের চাপ- এ ধরনের নানা পরিবর্তনের মিলিত প্রভাবেই সেই সময় থেকে প্রাণীর জীবনে বৈচিত্র্য এনে দেয়।
