তিনি বলেন, ‘মেয়ের বয়স কম হওয়ায় তার স্বামীকে কনডম পরার কথা বলেছিলাম আমি।’ বাংলাদেশে ধর্ষণ এবং যৌন হয়রানি দুটোই গুরুতর সমস্যা। আর তরুণীদের এসব সমস্যা থেকে রক্ষার জন্য যুগ যুগ ধরেই শিশুবিবাহকে নিরাপদ উপায় হিসেবে দেখা হয়।

যেহেতু বিয়ের পর তাদের স্কুলে যাওয়া বন্ধ হয়ে যায়, এটি তাদেরকে যৌন হয়রানি থেকে রক্ষা করে।চাঁদ, মধ্য আফ্রিকান প্রজাতন্ত্র এবং নাইজারের পর চতুর্থ দেশ হিসেবে বাংলাদেশে শিশু বিবাহের হার সবচেয়ে বেশি। বযস ১৫ হওয়ার আগেই দেশটির এক তৃতীয়াংশ মেয়ের বিয়ে হয়ে যায়।

আর ১৮ বছর হওয়ার আগেই বিয়ে হয়ে যায় দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ কন্যা সন্তানের। যদিও বাংলাদেশে নারীদেরবিবাহের ন্যূনতম বয়স ১৮ এবং পুরুষদের ক্ষেত্রে তা ২১। তাড়াতাড়ি বিয়ে করার পরিণতিও নাটকীয়। বেশিরভাগ মেয়েই স্কুল থেকে ঝরে পড়ে। আর বয়স ১৫ হওয়ার আগেই গর্ভবতী হওয়া মেয়েগুলো সন্তান জন্ম দেওয়ার সময় মারা যাওয়ার সমুহ সম্ভাবনা থাকে।

কিন্তু অন্যদিকে ২০ বা তদুর্ধ্ব বয়সে বিয়ে হওয়া নারীদের ক্ষেত্রে সন্তান জন্ম দেওয়ার সময় এ ঝুঁকি থাকে না।প্রতিবেদনটির প্রতিবেদক অ্যালিসন জয়সি বলেন, আমি রুনার সাথে তার বিয়ের দিন এবং তার আগের দিন, মোট ২ দিন কাটিয়েছিলাম।

১৩ বছর বয়সী মেয়েটিকে তার বোন এবং বন্ধুদের সাথে খেলা ফেলে হঠাৎ অন্ধকারাচ্ছন্ন মেঘের মধ্যে যেতে দেখলাম আমি। তার মধুর শৈশবকাল যে নিমিষেই বিলীন হতে চলেছে এবং তার পরিবর্তে স্ত্রী হিসেবে গুরুদায়িত্ব পালনের সময় হয়ে গেছে এটা জানলে হয়তো তখনই সে বিয়ে করতে আপত্তি জানাত।
